Let’s look at a different approach in taking effective steps to increase motivation.
It is said that a person learns from the cradle to the grave. To do so and be effective, a part of that learning process, is to increase the understanding of what can be of benefit to oneself and/or others.
So, whatever the need or desire, a thought process usually occurs, where a person tries to think of an idea or plan to realise that objective.
This thought process needs a bridge that will transform this idea or plan to a physical accomplishment.
The bridge is MOTIVATION.
What Does Motivation Mean?
Before taking effective steps to increase motivation let’s consider what this means.
Definitions for motivation are numerous and include;
- A reason or reasons for acting or behaving in a particular way
- Enthusiasm for doing something
- Willingness to do something
A more meaningful definition of motivation should be;
A reason that generates the energy and drive to accomplish your desire or objective.
Although motivation levels differ from one person to the next the overall process is, in essence, the same for everyone.
If mental and physical energy as well as time and possibly financial resources are needed then the following questions need to be considered.

- What is the reason for this objective?
- What steps need to be taken?
- Will it be beneficial to get help and advice from a friend/partner/family member?
Understanding Motivation
Let’s take an example.
Putting on weight is something many people experience. This can lead to tiredness, a fluctuation in energy levels and for some low self esteem.
If there is a lack of exercise in one’s lifestyle then consider the following scenario.
- What is the reason for this objective?
Reducing weight, in a sensible way, will, not only, help one look and feel better but will, in addition, provide the energy to manage daily tasks.
- What steps need to be taken?
Consider an activity that is simple and enjoyable to do.
If it is simple like walking or jogging then it can be started easily. A walk very much like a jog, out on the street or the local park wearing comfortable clothing, can be started today.
If it is enjoyable then it will create a positive feeling and sense of anticipation.
Consider enjoyment as the nutrition that strengthens motivation.
- Will it be beneficial to get help and advice from a friend/partner/family member?
Sometimes taking the first step is the hardest because what might be easy for someone else to do can take an immense amount of courage for the one undertaking the same activity or task.
A million and one reasons can create an obstacle towards achieving a dream, hope or ambition.
If that’s the case then speaking to a close friend or family member is beneficial. Giving encouragement is important in itself but will be of more value, especially, if it’s from a person who is trustworthy.
