smart goal setting

When it comes to achieving one’s fitness aspirations or for any objective in life it pays, in more than one way, to be smart when setting goals.

This article has an important connection with another piece of writing on this blog that has a focus on how to take effective steps to increase motivation.

The Definition of Motivation

A recap on the definition of motivation is:

A reason that generates the energy and drive to accomplish a desire or objective.

Motivation is a necessary ingredient to be effective in setting goals, whether big or small, that will ultimately lead to SUCCESS.

When the motivational mindset is addressed one will be better prepared to take the next step which is to create a plan to achieve the desired GOAL.

What Is A Goal?

A simple definition of a goal is:

The planning of and taking subsequent steps to reach a desired aim in the future.

Setting A Goal & Making It Happen

As stated before the aim of this blog is to look at fitness, health and wellbeing for everyone.

It is easier to begin with simplicity in mind. Then once a start has been made towards realising the goal additional details, if relevant, can be thought of and added for the next step.

So let’s be SMART when setting goals.

Be Specific

What is the goal?

Have a clear vision of what one wants to do and then write it down in a concise way as a reminder and motivation of the goal to accomplish.

For example, `taking a jog every day, around the block with a friend, after work/college’ is more meaningful than just stating `I want to lose weight’.

The goal can be undertaken individually, however, having a friend who shares similar ideals will provide an extra boost of motivation and support.

Can It Be Measured?

A goal that can be assessed will provide evidence that the desired result has been achieved.

Having numbers to analyse will give an insight to progress and how well the goal is materialising into reality.

Continuing from the above example, make a record of one’s weight at the beginning of the goal and make a note each week of any new development.

Is It Attainable?

Be realistic. If necessary confide in someone trustworthy. Honest feedback will give a confirmation of one realising their goal with greater certainty.

Losing 4-8 pounds over a month is a safer target and better for long term health than say 20 pounds over the same period that may lead to nutrient deficiency.

Make It Relevant

By making the goal personal and enjoyable there will be a sense of motivation and focus with an outcome that will lead to improvement and productivity.

How Long Will It Take?

A time frame provides the focus on getting the goal accomplished. The goal setting process works best when it is connected with a time period. Discipline will be maintained and distractions avoided.

Overall be smart when setting goals and achieve success by having a structure that makes one’s aim measurable, realistic, attainable and relevant all within a certain time frame.

Make this the TIME TO REACH YOUR GOALS!
